scanner......? well im drawing stuffs, and i haven't bought any scanner yet. Is it okay to use a camera? The reason why i want a scanner is because i thought that is clearer. HELP please.... can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages

kolbeinnthorfinnsson replied: "If you're drawing stuff on a piece of paper, you'll want to scan it. You can take a picture, but you'll have to worry about lighting, camera shake, etc. etc. If you're SCULPTING something, then you'll need a camera. The scanner holds the picture in place, provides clean light, and you can scan it with whatever resolution you desire. That picture can be put into any image editing software to edit however you wish."

What is a digital scanner, is it different from an ordinary scanner? I am filing an online application that needs a digital photo. It say there that if I don't have one, I could scan my photo with a digital scanner. I have a HP scanjet scanner. I know this is a dumb question and I think that flatbed scanners are digital scanners. I am right or wrong. I just want to scan my photo so I have a digital photo, using a digital scanner whatever it is. Sorry for this very confusing question. Hope someone could help me. Thanks in advance.

pc_modder_guy replied: "no, they're the same thing."

sanelunatik replied: "If it scans into a computer, it's a digital scanner. So you are right, your scanner is a digital scanner. If you scan the picture, it will save as an image file on your harddrive. It may even specify where to save it. An alternative to this is if you have a digital camera. You could hook it up via USB to your computer or by the memory card."

robby o replied: "digital means it can be digitally converted into the computer to be edited. if its not digital then its manual, manual means its not digital like that old camcorder u used to have thats big with a videcassete. digital is the new age of technology."

How can I install a scanner in my computer? I got a Canon MX300 Series Printer with is build in with a Scanner. I just don't know how to install the Scanner. At first I I accidentally deleted everything in my computer so I had to reinstall every thing. The printers information got installed but not the Scanners one.

PurpleGirl replied: "Did you try downloading the software again? Make sure you download the scanner software."

What type of scanner would I need to put the images from film negatives onto my computer? I have recently gotten about 40 negatives from approximately the 1920's. This negatives are huge approx 3in X 5 in. I would like to have them developed but when I checked that avenue the price quoted was astronomical. Is there a scanner that I can buy which I can use to download these and other images to my computer. I also have old 126 film negatives that noone prints anymore as well as the usual accumulation of negatives that fall out of their packages which I would like to use this scanner for. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

B.B. Thornton replied: "There are scanners now that will do that. Which ones? I don't know, do a search in google for scanners and you will find a couple. Kind of pricey I think."

Justin L replied: "You need a film scanner. There are some reviews here:."

brnslippyx replied: "There are many scanners that will scan medium to large format negatives but they are pricey, as they are marketed towards professionals. They can be upwards of $1,000."

xtort000 replied: "The best value for this task would probably be an epson 4870 or (I believe) 4950. They run in the $400 range and should get the job done. I've used the higher end models in the v700 series, and they are acceptable (if not painfully long for scan times) for 4x5 negs."

gromit801 replied: "A dedicated film scanner, like a Nikon Coolscan. Flatbed scanners with film attachments are crap."

How To Wire A Scanner Made For House Outlet to Work In A Car? I have a base scanner that is made to plug into the wall outlet in a house. I want to put that scanner in my personal vehicle so I can always listen to the radio traffic of the PD I work for. I want it all to be mounted and wired so that all of the wires are hidden, I don't want to have to plug it into the cigarette lighter or anything. How would I go about wiring this up? Do I need to add a fuse, what source do I tap the electricity from, what supplies will I need, how should I route the wires? I'm planning on mounting it under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Thanks. I have a power inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, but this needs to be a setup where it's permanently mounted and all wires are hidden.

TommyTheCat replied: "Power Inverter."

Johnny replied: "Just buy one for the car there not that expensive."

What is the best scanner for kids pictures? I want to take my girls colored pencil and crayon drawings and make them into greeting cards. when I scan them (with my very old scanner) the pencil images are faded and the colors distorted. What should I get for my new scanner?

DUNBAR PAPPY replied: "You might not need a new scanner, just some adjusted settings on the current one. For starters, in the properties of the scanner, raise the 'resolution' level (aka 'dpi' settings) This will give a crisper image. Not sure which one you'll want but experiment with 600dpi or better. If you have time, you may want to try this small freeware application that will let the kids draw, color, paint and play around lots (and have a terrific time!) directly to digital file, get 'Art Rage' The free one is limited, but very functional & easy; the upgrade has tons more 'stuff' but I haven't tried that one. Google 'Artrage' for download site; you won't be sorry!"

What scanner settings are best for archiving old family photos? I want to scan and archive a bunch of old photos, and save them on CDs. I want to use photoshop to do some basic editing such as cropping, adjusting contrast, and saving them at a manageable file size. I'm a little unclear about the relationship between things like pixels, actual image size, resolution and file size. After editing each photo, I think I'd like to end up with two images-- one that could be as big as 1000kb for archival purposes, and another saved at about 200kb for convenient e-mailing, etc. My questions: What scanner settings (as far as size, pixels, etc.) should I use in order to avoid losing too much image information in the editing and saving process? Is it best to scan and edit as a tiff and then save as a jpeg? Should I save the larger of the two files as a tiff? Should I use the "save for web" function? What settings are best for the final saved images in terms of actual image size, resolution, dpi, pixels, etc.? Thanks for your advice!

yeperdoo replied: "If you're gonna have them pinted, then 300dpi will do. That may take up a lot of disk space, but if you're gonna archive them, you might as well make them worth something when you want to retrive 'em. Disks are cheap...memories ain't. To get the most out of your disk and make 'em look good on-screen....then go for 72dpi. hope it helps"

photocenter48 replied: "If the print is 4x6 or bigger try 300 dpi, but if it is smaller say .. wallet size I do recomend 600 dpi, if it is even smaller, then 1200 dpi; once they are in the monitor make them all 300 with the wright dimensions that you want to put on the CD, or 72 JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) for the web. To your CD save as tiff (Tagged Information File Format), or PSD (PhotoShop Document)"

JediKnut replied: "If it's for archival purposes, the best (& most sensible!) thing to do is to scan at the highest possible quality. Blank media (CDs & DVDs) don't even cost too much, & it's definitely worth keep the originals at the highest quality. In fact, I'd go a step further & say that you should always have a copy of each CD/DVD you have images on, just in case... And preferably, don't keep the 2 CDs together. Keep one at work & one at home, or two in two different places at home..."

What is the best police scanner that isnt wickedly expensive? I am looking to buy a good radio (police) scanner but i dont want to spend that much money. What am i gunna have to spend to get a decent scanner? Can anyone give me some tips on where to buy and any good brands and what is the best bang for the buck? thanks , take care everyone

^^{31337} replied: "You know you can mod a radio for free.. The general scanner channels range from 506.737 - 670MHz and you can easily tune from channel to channel"

What type of scanner do you recommend for importing high res material to use in Photoshop? Material to use for blends, borders, etc. What seperates a high-quality scanner from one that should be avoided for this type of work?

Katie replied: "Most scanners have software to go with it, in which you can set the resolution value you want it to scan in. Bascially, just about any scanner should do. These days most of them are capable of high-quality work. I use my 3-in-1 printer's scanner in the same way (hp vivera)"

Dr. Sam replied: "I doubt there are any but "flat bed" scanners sold any more, but don't buy any other kind. You can find scanners as well as all-in-one printers (which include scanners) at. I have a Stylus Photo RX620 and it's great. It will scan up to 12,800 dpi, if you want it to! You could find a rough spot on a piece of hair at that resolution."

nixie replied: "avoid the scanning steps totally, have the photographer save the file onto a CD."

What type of radio scanner do I need to purchase if I want to listen to the New Orleans Police Dept? I would like to be able to listen to the New Orleans, LA police department using a police scanner. Which one out there would be able to pick them up? Thanks!

rainmaker replied: "Go to your local Radio Shack store"

leslie S replied: "if you are new to scanning I suggest you go to a local Radio Shack and talk to them or go to the bearcat site and check out their extensive info. NOPD is in the 800 MHz range and you need a scanner that does .5 step intervals. Remember these are FM signals and can only be heard "line of sight". I have seen people living far away from a town not understanding that it is radio waves they are trying to pick up."
